Fashion—clothes, clothing, covering oneself up in skins, furs, fibers and other materials—is all about appearances. It’s about deception and diversion and seduction and contradiction and how odd and goofy and wise and wise-ass and challenging and beautiful all those appearances can be. Katherine Maxwell—aka Kat, aka Max, aka “Whatever you want to call me,” she says with a laugh and a grin while showing off her Santa Fe home/studio, “I’ve been called many many things”—is no different from anyone else. She’s all about appearances too. Not in a fake way, though. In a real way. A good way. A playful and interesting way. “I’m not who I seem,” she says, sort of about herself but mainly in reference to her many sartorial constructions.“And neither do you have to be who you seem to be.”
